My headmaster at Primary School told my Mum & Dad that I would be some sort of artist and I can’t remember a time that I was not painting or drawing. It’s so much a part of who I am that I feel restless if I go very long, without at the very least, a bit of sketching. Having graduated from Falmouth College of Art and Design in 1990, I was never in any doubt as to the direction my career would take. I was going to paint! Initially the paid work was with illustration and indeed I still enjoy a degree of this work, particularly the designing & illustrating of the postage stamps. However, I am largely concentrating on developing my paintings, both oil and watercolour.
As I currently live in the East Devon village of Woodbury, this allows me to add Devon Scenes to those of my much loved Cornwall, land of my childhood and to which I return as often as time allows. The sea herself, the ships past and present that sail upon her, together with the scenery of wild and remote places remain the main sources of inspiration to me. I have walked, cycled and sailed from the Isles of Scilly to the Outer Hebrides and the Orkney Isles, I have been privileged to witness breathtaking scenes and moments in nature. The essence of which I strive to breath into my paintings, bringing those uplifting and changing moments of sky, sea and the spirit of wild remote places, home with me on canvas.
I have exhibited thoughout the country and demand for my original paintings continues to grow. Commissions are undertaken and to order from the Gallery please contact me by email or by phone on – (+44) 01395 232191
Sketching Blog
Well my lunch time sketching has come to an end, as I knew that it would, as the ‘little fella’ has moved on and is no longer having his lunch time nap. My sketching times are now a bit more ad hoc, fitting in at odd times and the subject matter can vary greatly. Despite the original ambition of one sketch each day not being currently realistic, I will still be sketching on a fairly regular basis (weekly hopefully) – so keep tuning in.
I first started sketching with the art class at school and it is something that I have always, since kept up. I lose myself in time whilst sketching and in the winter I don’t notice the cold creeping in to my hands and me, until I’ve finished concentrating – so if you see some strange arty looking chap in fingerless gloves jumping up & down, flapping his arms around, it may just be me. I find sketching really makes me see, not just look, at the world around me, which helps to embed the images into my brain. I always enjoy it and although it can sometimes also be frustrating, one thing is for sure – I can’t stop – as my ever increasing pile of sketch books will testify!
I have been asked by several people about purchasing my sketches, so I have decided to offer some for sale. So, unless they are marked ‘not for sale’ or ‘sold’, they are each priced at £55 + P&P (though if they are larger than normal, they may be more expensive – please email me for details) The sketches are roughly A5 (unless otherwise stated), each comes mounted ready for framing (overall mount size 12×10 inches – standard frame size).
